We are on the verge of a new era in computing, powered by the bizarre yet powerful world of quantum physics. Scientists are learning to control individual atoms, using them as the building blocks for potentially powerful computers. In this talk, we delve into how these “quantum machines” work, specifically focusing on how we trap and manipulate ions as quantum bits. We will explore the types of problems quantum computers can solve, and discuss the exciting challenges and possibilities that lie ahead in this rapidly developing field.

Rainer Blatt studied physics at the University of Mainz, where he earned his doctorate in 1981. After research stays in Berlin, Hamburg, and the USA – including at JILA in Boulder with Nobel laureate John L. Hall – he became Professor of Physics in Göttingen in 1994, before moving to the University of Innsbruck in 1995. From 2003 to 2024, he also served as Scientific Director at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Blatt is a pioneer in quantum optics and quantum information, especially in the development of quantum computers using trapped ions. His team achieved key milestones such as the first quantum teleportation of atomic information (2003), the creation of entangled multi-ion systems, and the realization of quantum error correction and quantum simulations.
For his groundbreaking research, he has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Herbert Walther Award (2023), the Micius Quantum Prize (2019), and the Carl Zeiss Research Award (2009). He is a full member of several academies, including the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
Rainer Blatt studierte Physik an der Universität Mainz und promovierte 1981. Nach Forschungsaufenthalten in Berlin, Hamburg sowie am JILA in Boulder (USA) bei Nobelpreisträger John L. Hall wurde er 1994 Professor für Physik in Göttingen und wechselte 1995 an die Universität Innsbruck. Von 2003 bis 2024 war er zudem wissenschaftlicher Direktor am Institut für Quantenoptik und Quanteninformation (IQOQI) der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.
Prof. Blatt gilt als Pionier der Quantenoptik und Quanteninformationsverarbeitung. Mit seiner Arbeitsgruppe realisierte er zentrale Experimente, darunter die erste kontrollierte Quanten-Teleportation (2003), verschränkte Vielteilchensysteme, Quantenfehlerrkorrektur und bahnbrechende Quanten-Simulationen.
Für seine herausragenden Leistungen wurde er mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet, darunter der Herbert-Walther-Preis (2023), der Micius Quantum Prize (2019) und der Carl-Zeiss-Forschungspreis (2009). Er ist Mitglied mehrerer internationaler Akademien, unter anderem der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der National Academy of Sciences (USA).
